Consecuencias demográficas del sitio de nidificación en la hormiga cortadora de hojas Acromyrmex lobicornis: un enfoque utilizando modelos matriciales

Resumen

Utilizando modelos matriciales, analizamos cómo las características del sitio de nidificación, al determinar diferentes tipos de hormigueros, influyen sobre la demografía de la hormiga cortadora Acromyrmex lobicornis en el noroeste de la Patagonia. El incremento anual de nidos cuyos domos fueron construidos en la base de plantas fue el doble que para los nidos cuyos domos fueron construidos sobre suelo desnudo. Este mayorincremento de los hormigueros con domos en la base de plantas se debió al rápido crecimiento de los nidos pequeños y a una baja reducción de tamaño al llegar a diámetros mayores. Los nidos establecidos en la base de plantas incorporan los tallos como soporte estructural de los domos, lo cual facilitaría su construcción, expansión, mantenimiento y reparación ante roturas. De esta forma, nidificar en la base de plantas minimiza la permanencia en la etapa más vulnerable del nido (domos pequeños) y maximiza la permanencia en la etapa donde su aporte de individuos sexuados es mayor (domos grandes). El manejo de hormigueros establecidos en la base de plantas podría ayudar a controlar o conservar a esta especie de hormiga.
