¿Es posible conservar la diversidad biológica y producir madera en las plantaciones de pino de la Patagonia argentina? Un estudio de caso

Resumen

Las plantaciones forestales mitigan problemas ambientales y favorecen economías reducidas en carbono, pero la demanda de madera impulsa la expansión acelerada de monocultivos que son potencialmente deletéreos para la diversidad biológica. En este trabajo se evaluó la compatibilidad entre la diversidad taxonómica de plantas vasculares y la producción de madera de Pinus ponderosa en rodales con tres niveles de cobertura, localizados en la estepa y el ecotono bosque-estepa, en el noroeste de la Patagonia argentina (40°5´ S - 71°12´ O). La humedad del suelo, la diversidad y el índice de sitio fueron mayores en el ecotono bosqueestepa. La cobertura de P. ponderosa se correlacionó negativamente con la intensidad de luz y la diversidad, y positivamente con la cantidad de hojarasca y suelo desnudo en el piso del bosque. Luego de un turno de corta de 45 años, la producción proyectada de madera fue máxima con un ‘índice de densidad de rodal’ IDR≥800, pero disminuyó drásticamente la diversidad de plantas. La mejor opción para conservar la diversidad fue mantener a lo largo del turno IDR≤400. Sin embargo, la producción de madera de calidad exhibiría una rentabilidad negativa con IDR<500, independientemente de la calidad de sitio, la superficie, la densidad inicial, el esquema de manejo y la distancia al mercado de bienes y servicios de la plantación. La correlación negativa que ocurre entre los indicadores ambiental y productivo implicaría que no existe un régimen silvicultural que maximice en forma simultánea estos objetivos. Esta incompatibilidad espacial no implica desalentar a priori las iniciativas productivas basadas en las plantaciones. La actividad forestal contribuye a resolver problemas ambientales, sociales y económicos profundos, en particular en el escenario actual de aumento de la población humana, el consumo de recursos y la degradación y la destrucción de los bosques naturales.
