El consumo del agua por el cultivo de olivo (Olea europaea L.) en el noroeste de Argentina: una comparación con la Cuenca Mediterránea

Resumen

Durante los últimos 20 años ha habido una gran expansión en la superficie plantada con olivo (Olea europaea L.) en el noroeste de Argentina (NOA). Sin embargo, la mayoría de la información utilizada en la región para la toma de decisiones de manejo acerca del consumo de agua por el cultivo proviene de la Cuenca Mediterránea. Esta revisión discute: 1) las diferencias en el clima entre la Cuenca Mediterránea y la zona olivícola del NOA, 2) el consumo de agua por el olivo en el Mediterráneo y sus respuestas ecofisiológicas al estrés hídrico, y 3) resultados experimentales en el NOA utilizando a la localidad de Aimogasta (La Rioja) como un caso de estudio. La información meteorológica indica que la temperatura del aire (principalmente en el invierno y primavera) y la evapotranspiración potencial anual (ETo) son mayores en el NOA que en el Mediterráneo, mientras que la precipitación es menor. Estas diferencias en temperatura resultan en: una escasez de horas de frío para la floración en algunas variedades, adelantos en las etapas fenológicas y cambios en la calidad y cantidad del aceite en el NOA en relación con el Mediterráneo. Resultados experimentales del Mediterráneo muestran que la transpiración y el rendimiento, entre otros, responden fuertemente al riego a pesar de que el olivo es una especie con una alta tolerancia al estrés hídrico en comparación a otros frutales. En forma similar al Mediterráneo, el consumo de agua por el olivo en Aimogasta fue estimado como 70-75% de ETo bajo condiciones de riego óptimo y el consumo de agua es 1100-1200 mm/año en el NOA y 900- 1000 en el Mediterráneo. Además, el riego requerido en el NOA es más que el doble por la falta de precipitación en muchas zonas. Un resultado no anticipado en Aimogasta, basado sobre los estudios del Mediterráneo, fue el excesivo crecimiento vegetativo bajo condiciones de alto riego. El excesivo vigor observado podría ser explicado potencialmente como una respuesta al riego en interacción con las altas temperaturas de la primavera que ocurren en la región. El desarrollo de estrategias de riego deficitario controlado en la primavera (u otros momentos) podría permitir un ahorro de agua y una mejora de la relación entre crecimiento vegetativo y reproductivo.
