Abstract
Ants which nest and forage in logs were collected in July and August 1994 in three Atlantic Forest reserves showing different levels of degradation: Una, Barrolândia (Southern Bahia State), and Linhares (Northern Espirito Santo) in Brazil. A total of 103 species were recorded. Species number per log ranged between 0 and 8. The most diversified sub family was Myrmicinae, followed by Ponerinae. Highest diversity was found in the reserve with lowest human influence. Possible interactions among species were investigated for each habitat, but these studies have shown that the presente of any ant species is rarely dependent upon that of any other. Furthermore, few ants showed a strong preferente for particular conditions of their habitat.
