Abundancia de Aedes (Ochlerotatus) albifasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) en el sur de la laguna Mar Chiquita
Abstract
Aedes albifasciatus is a neotropical mosquito, very abundantin the Plata region of Argentina. Its drought-resistant eggs, hatch when covered by water for 24 hours. If temperature is adequate, adults emerge synchronously in about 9 days. The aim of this work was to study the spatial and temporal changes in the abundance of adultfemale Aedes albifasciatus in the southern region ofthe Mar Chiquita lake and its degree of synchronization at a regional scale. Rainfall or an index which is useful for the estimation oflarval abundance, could be used as predictors of adultfemale abundance near the breeding sites 7 to 15 daysin advance. Aedes albifasciatus abundance in the study area would be mainly influenced by local factors, since a lack of synchronization of mosquito abundance between sampling sites located more than 25 km apart was observed. This could be related to the spatial heterogeneity in the occurrence of rains during the study period. The existence of a mosquito abundance gradientfrom the breeding sites was detected.
