Abstract

Mother-offspring pairs of vicuñas were studied during the first and third months of the calves’ lives under two “conditions “:field without management and corral with management. Distance between mother and calf, individual behaviors, and interactions were recorded and grouped for each calf/week of age, resulting in a matrix of 18 x 25 characters. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis were run on this matrix. Three groups were defined: field/first month, corral/first month, and third month. The most important factors for the discrimination were the distance of more than four meters between mothers and calves and the number of minutes in which the calf is grazing or lying. The use of this methodology to describe mother-offspring interactive behavior is discussed.
