Abstract

The soil seed bank of a two-year old enclosure in a grassland dominated by Stipa speciosa was studied. Samples were taken at different microsites and depths for the determination of seed batik size and composition. The study focused on the correlation between the species present in the bank and those in the vegetation, the qualitative and quantitative differences between two microsites (one windward and the other leeward of Stipa speciosa tussocks), and the vertical profile of seed distribution. The results indicated that: (a) The size of the bank is relatively large due to the presence of annual species. (b) The bank consists of only a few species. (c) There is a poor correlation between the species present in the bank and those in the vegetation. (d) There is no significant difference between windward and leeward microsites. (e) Below 3 cm of depth, the amount of seeds abruptly decreases. The dominant species, Stipa speciosa, did not show a batik strategy, probably due to the evolutionary history of the steppe, for which there are no records of frequent and intense disturbance.
