1. Based on a comparative and synchronic study conducted at three locations within the Sandy Pampas Region (Argentina), the role of the land use (natural, agricultural, and livestock) and vegetation management on soil health is examined in the context of significant landscape transformations associated with the agricultural expansion.
2. Soil respiration (SRp) was determined in the laboratory by measuring CO₂ absorbed in an alkaline trap. The method is considered a sensitive and effective indicator of soil health. In addition, several key soil properties (i.e., pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon content, and carbonate content) as well as geomorphological characteristics are included in the data analysis and discussion.
3. The results show low SRp values, consistent with sandy soils characterized by low organic matter and dry climates. Wind erosion in the study area is considered a relevant factor in explaining the low SRp values in certain sites. SRp was significantly higher in natural sites than in agricultural ones, except for the Alfalfares locality, which showed no significant differences. This is potentially due to the implementation of precision agriculture and a higher proportion of silt fractions in the parent material. Natural vegetation, cover crops and alfalfa exhibited the highest SRp, whereas rotation crops and forage pastures showed the lowest values. Positive correlations were detected between SRp and physicochemical properties, indicating that its variability is associated with nutrient status (OC and EC), a relationship that was even more pronounced with pH.
4. Implications. SRp constitutes a useful tool for identifying factors that constrain microbial activity. These results highlight the importance of preserving natural vegetation patches, reducing the use of phytosanitary products, and employing cover crops.
